Good Bye,  Sunny Morris

02.02.12

A blog by Sunny Morris.

If you receive an e-mail from Sunny Nunan, don't delete it. It's still me --Sunny from Core24.

On December 31, I married an Aussie named Ben in Bellingen, Australia. I won’t bore you with the details on how perfect the day was but feel free to take a peek at a few pictures here if you’re curious. Before getting engaged, I never thought about whether or not I would change my last name if I ever remarried. But when the time came, I realized I already knew the answer.

Sunny Nunan it would be.

What I didn't expect was the reaction I'd get from people when asked about whether or not I'd keep my last name. There was this look of concern and surprise when I told them I was going 1950’s. Afterall, I've been "Sunny Morris" for 20 years. "You're an 'established professional--what about your business?" they asked. "How will people know it's still you?"

I'll tell them.

Nobody understands the importance of personal branding better than me. As a marketer of professional services, personal brands are sometimes all we're left with --especially during tumultuous times. But more important than business, more important than marketing-- and more important than the temporary inconvenience caused by changing the name of “a brand” that existed for 20 years—was, for me, taking my husband's last name. (Who, by the way, had no expectation that I would change my name.)

See, a brand’s name can change if everyone understands the 'why' and if the change better reflects the mission. In my case, the mission is to share my loyalty and show my solidarity—from the very beginning. This is why I’m now Sunny Nunan. And I think that sounds terrific. Please join me in accepting my “new” personal brand.

Now off to press some handkerchiefs.
